15 signs your boss actually cares about you (the only list you’ll need)

Bosses come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s often tricky to know how to read them.

Are they nice because they want something from you? Or are they genuinely interested in you as a person?

Today, we’ll take a look at the signs your boss cares about you so that you know where you stand!

1) Your boss listens to you in meetings

The first thing to look out for is if your boss actually listens to you in meetings.

While a lot of bosses will pay attention to the high-ranking people in the room, they might not pay attention to the lower-ranking people.

This is a big red flag since it shows that your boss doesn’t care to give you a voice and that he or she isn’t interested in what you have to say.

If, however, your boss listens to you in meetings, then that’s a good sign that he or she respects you.

It’s a sign that your opinion matters, and that you have a valuable contribution to make to the team.

But you see, a lot of the time, it doesn’t even have anything to do with your rank, some bosses just don’t listen to certain people.

This can be super frustrating, especially when you feel like you have a lot to offer.

So, if you feel like your boss doesn’t listen to you, then that’s a good sign that you might want to consider looking for a new job.

2) Your boss gives you the chance to speak up

Another thing that will give you a good indication of whether your boss cares about you is if he or she gives you the opportunity to speak up in meetings.

If you’ve been given the chance to contribute, then that shows your boss respects you and trusts you to take on certain tasks or roles.

It’s a sign that your boss is actually invested in you and your opinion.

If your boss doesn’t give you the chance to speak up, then that’s another sign that you’re not really valued by your boss.

That might actually be a sign that you’re not being given enough responsibility, but it can also mean that your boss doesn’t care about you.

You see, when a boss is interested in what an employee thinks or has to say, they will give them the chance to speak up.

They want to hear their ideas and they want other employees to hear those ideas, too.

But when your boss doesn’t let you speak up or even talks over you, it can be a sign that he or she doesn’t care about you.

3) Your boss wants you to improve as a person

Another sign that your boss cares about you is when they want you to improve as a person.

Through whatever means possible, they will help you become a better version of yourself.

Who wouldn’t want to improve themselves?

I know I do.

The problem is that there are far too many fake gurus out there ready to sell you unrealistic and ineffective solutions for improving your life by becoming a “better version” of yourself.

They want you to meditate, radiate “positive vibrations” and visualize the life of your dreams. They say this will make it come true.

Here’s the crazy thing:

Visualization and positive vibes won’t bring you closer to your dreams, and they can actually drag you backward into time-wasting, idle fantasy, and frustration.

But it’s hard to find fulfillment at work when you’re being hit with so many Instagram influencers telling you how a special kind of yoga, diet, or incense will transform your life.

You can end up trying so hard and not finding the answers you need that your life and dreams begin to feel hopeless.

You want solutions, but all you’re being told is to create a perfect utopia inside your own mind. It doesn’t work.

I want you to turn off all the noise for a second and get back to absolute basics.

4) You’ve been explicitly congratulated by your boss

Another sign that your boss actually cares about you is if you’ve been explicitly congratulated by your boss.

If you’ve done something that’s really amazing, you’ll probably notice that your boss will say something.

This isn’t just a casual “well done.” Your boss will probably make a big deal out of it.

This is a sign that your boss is genuinely proud of you and what you’ve done, which is a great sign that he or she actually cares about you.

If your boss has never explicitly congratulated you for anything, then that’s a sign that he or she doesn’t care about you.

It could be that your boss is just a generally unimpressable person, but it might also be a sign that he or she doesn’t respect you.

But wait, that’s not all.

If your boss cares about you, then he or she will commend you in front of other employees.

This can be seen in casual conversations or during meetings.

For example, if your boss is impressed with the work that you did on a recent project, he or she will let the rest of the team know about it.

It shows that your boss cares about you enough to take the time to recognize you for what you’ve done and how hard you worked on it.

This can be seen as a sign of affection by some people and it shows that your boss takes an interest in what you do and how much effort goes into achieving results at work.

A good boss will do this regardless of how much they care about their employees, simply because it is motivating to receive praise for what you’ve achieved.

Think about it: when you get praised for your hard work, you’re more willing to continue working hard.

That’s because you want to get more praise and recognition.

5) You feel included in company events/decisions

Another sign that your boss cares about you is if you feel genuinely included in company events and/or decisions.

For example, if your boss invites you to company socials, or they invite you to meetings where they discuss future plans and projects, then that’s a great sign that your boss cares about you.

It means that you’re not seen as a replaceable employee and that your boss respects you.

It means that you’re actually part of the team and that your voice actually matters.

If, however, your boss doesn’t invite you to anything and keeps you away from discussions about the company, then that could be a red flag.

It might mean that your boss doesn’t care about you, or it might mean that your boss thinks you’re too low-ranking to be involved in such meetings.

Now: not every employee can be included in company decisions, even if the boss cares about them, so keep that in mind.

However, do you feel like your opinion is generally taken seriously?

Do you feel like your boss genuinely cares about you?

If so, then that’s a good sign that your boss does indeed care about you.

6) Your boss takes the time to know you

If your boss genuinely cares about you, then he or she will take the time to get to know you and actually care about getting to know you better.

They won’t just be interested in what you do, but they’ll want to know more about you as a person.

This isn’t limited to the start of your employment, either.

Your boss should be taking the time to get to know you as time goes on. It’s a positive sign that your boss actually cares about you.

If your boss isn’t taking the time to get to know you, then that could be a red flag.

It could mean that your boss doesn’t care about you, or it could mean that your boss is just an uninterested person who doesn’t care about anyone.

You see, bosses and private lives should generally stay apart, that’s true.

However, a good boss will ask about your family, vacation plans, or other big life events and will stay in the loop on all the major things happening in your life.

This shows that your boss cares about you as a person and not just as an employee.

7) You feel comfortable being yourself around your boss

You can also tell if your boss cares about you by the way they treat you.

If your boss respects you, they won’t try to change you or act like they want you to be somebody else.

This doesn’t mean that your boss will let you get away with anything or be totally unprofessional.

It just means that your boss won’t try to make you feel like you have to change who you are.

If you feel comfortable being yourself around your boss, they respect and care about you, and they don’t want you to change or do anything different.

If, on the other hand, your boss tries to get you to change or act differently, that could be a red flag.

You see, a good boss wants their employees to be themselves and to express who they are.

If your boss does that, he probably cares about you!

8) Your boss is there when you need help

If your boss genuinely cares about you and wants you to succeed, they’ll be there for you when you need help.

This doesn’t just mean that your boss will solve your problems for you, it also means that they’ll be available to help you solve your problems.

For example, if you’re struggling with a problem in your life, like a problem at home, or a problem with your family, your boss will be there for you.

They’ll want to help you solve those problems, and they’ll want to be there for you when you need someone to talk to.

If your boss isn’t there when you need them, then that’s a red flag.

It could mean that they don’t care about you, or they’re just a generally uninterested person who doesn’t want to get involved in your life.

You see, the first step here is that your boss actually needs to be aware of the problem in the first place, which only happens if your boss actually asks about your life and goals.

If you don’t talk to your boss about your problems, then they can’t help you solve them.

In fact, if you don’t talk to your boss about what’s going on in your life, then they won’t know what you care about or what matters to you.

They won’t be able to help you with those things.

In other words, if your boss doesn’t know what matters to you, then they can’t help you with those things!

So make sure that you tell them what matters to you and let them know when something is important enough for them to get involved.

This will show that your boss cares about the important parts of your life and that they want to help make all those parts of your life better.

9) Your boss treats you like a partner, not an inferior

This one is important.

If your boss treats you like an equal, then they probably care about you!

Your boss should treat you like a partner.

They should want to help you succeed, and they should want to work with you to achieve the goals that are important to both of you.

If your boss treats you like an inferior, then that’s a problem.

This could mean that your boss doesn’t think very highly of you or doesn’t consider you to be their equal.

It could also mean that they just don’t respect people in general and don’t care about people in general.

If your boss treats everyone like they’re inferior, then this is a red flag!

You see, to some degree, your boss is your boss, I get that. But when it comes to interpersonal matters, they should treat you like an equal.

Your boss should care about your growth and development as an employee, as well as a person.

They should encourage it and help nurture it in any way possible. If your boss doesn’t do this, then there’s a problem!

It means that they don’t see value in helping their employees grow personally or professionally or both.

This is a red flag because it shows them for who they really are: someone who doesn’t care.

10) Your boss asks you for feedback

Another thing to watch out for is if your boss actually asks for your feedback.

While some bosses will ask their employees for feedback on occasion, others will never do it.

This is a red flag since it shows that your boss doesn’t care about what you have to say.

If, however, your boss does ask for your opinion or feedback on occasion, then that’s a good sign that he or she cares about what you have to say.

When a boss cares about his or her employees, they will ask for their opinion on things.

This shows that they have faith in the employee’s ability to make decisions and contribute to the team.

When your boss asks for your opinion, then it shows that he or she believes what you have to say matters!

11) Your boss gives you challenging tasks

It’s a good sign if your boss gives you challenging work or tasks that help you grow as an employee.

This is a sign that your boss is interested in your development, and that he or she trusts you to take on certain challenges.

It shows that he or she values your opinion and wants to see you succeed!

You see, while the tasks might be a bit hard, this goes to show that your boss has confidence in you achieving all those tasks with ease!

12) You’ve received a raise or promotion from your boss

One of the best signs that your boss cares about you is if he or she has given you a raise or promotion.

The fact that your boss has taken the time to recognize your achievements means that he or she must see something in you, whether it be skill, talent, or effort.

If your boss is willing to give you a pay raise for what you’ve done, this must mean that he or she really cares about what you do at work.

It may seem like a small thing, but when your boss gives you a promotion, it shows that they have faith in what you can do and they trust your abilities enough to promote you to an even higher position where more responsibility lies.

When this happens, it can be seen as a sign of affection between two people who care about each other and wish each other well.

13) You receive regular feedback and criticism from your boss

Finally, another sign that your boss cares about you is if they give you regular feedback and criticism.

As an employee, it’s important to know where you stand at work, in order to improve yourself and become more productive.

If your boss doesn’t give you any feedback or criticism, then how are you supposed to know what areas of your work need improvement?

It’s important that employees receive constructive criticism from their bosses in order to improve their performance at work.

A good boss will take the time to find out what areas of an employee’s work need improving and then provide them with appropriate feedback so they can improve.

A good boss will also recognize employees when they do something well, by giving them praise or other rewards.

14) Your boss is a good person

Now: this one might be a little harder for you to determine, but it’s still a good thing to keep in mind.

If your boss is a good person, then that means that he or she cares about the well-being of others and will do the best they can to help any employees who need it.

This is especially true if your boss goes out of his or her way to help other people, even when they’re not his or her direct reports (i.e., helping someone else’s direct report).

If your boss genuinely cares about you and treats everyone in the company with respect and kindness, then that’s a good sign that he or she actually does care about you too!

15) He or she asks about your well-being

Whenever you have meetings with your boss, look for signs that your boss actually cares about you.

If you notice that your boss actually asks about your well-being, that’s a good sign.

If your boss genuinely cares about you, he or she will want to know how you’re doing.

This can be seen in casual conversations and in formal meetings.

If your boss is actively trying to find out if you’re okay and if you’re happy in your position, then that’s a great sign.

It means that your boss respects you and that he or she is actually interested in you as a person.

Sure, usually, bosses follow etiquette and won’t pry about your personal life, but most bosses who care about their employees will make an effort to find out whether they’re okay and whether they’re happy.

If your boss doesn’t ask about your well-being and he or she doesn’t really seem to care, that’s another sign that you might want to look for a new job.

You see, when a boss doesn’t care about the well-being of their employees, they are usually not very understanding when things happen, such as personal matters or hardships.

This can be problematic, you want to be able to talk to your boss when you need personal time off or when you aren’t feeling well.

The most important part?

When you aren’t happy with your job position anymore, it’s crucial to be able to talk to your boss about it.

When you’re unhappy, you need to be able to discuss your concerns with your boss and see if there are any options for improvement.

If you can’t do that, then your boss doesn’t care about you at all.

Either way, being in a good work environment is key to being productive and happy with what you do, so make sure you feel good where you work!
