10 ways to tell if your boyfriend wants you to lose weight

Are you paranoid or is your boyfriend trying to tell you something?

3) He keeps saying that you should eat healthier

This is a big hint that he’s worried about your weight – and health.

He may not feel comfortable telling you that he thinks you should lose weight, so he suggests that you both start eating healthier foods.

He’ll say something like, “We should eat less sugar and avoid processed foods” or “We need more fruits and vegetables in our diet”.

4) He keeps bringing up health topics

Another way to tell your boyfriend wants you to lose weight is by noting that he keeps bringing up health topics.

Maybe he’ll bring up heart disease or diabetes, and talk about how these things run in the family. He could bring up the fact that one of your parents is overweight, and then suggest that you should watch what you eat.

Or maybe he’ll tell you how he’s recently started a new exercise program and how great it’s been for his health or moods. This is a way to subtly say that he thinks you should consider doing the same.

5) He starts complimenting other women’s eating or workout habits

Here’s another way to tell that your man wants you to lose weight: he starts praising other women’s eating and workout habits.

He might start telling you how great other women look at the gym and ask you what they’re doing.

The chances are very high that he’ll then ask you, “Why don’t you exercise?”

This is a sign that he thinks it’s up to him to get you exercising and back into shape.

6) He keeps taking you on active dates outdoors

No more dinner and a movie. Now it’s hiking, jogging, and biking.

You gotta hand it to him, he’s being very discreet and working hard not to hurt your feelings.

It’s obvious that your man thinks you need to start exercising more! That’s why he keeps taking you on active dates outdoors.

But he obviously loves you because he’s going with you and is there to support you. He wants to take care of you.

7) He teases you about your weight

The guy never used to make jokes about your weight or eating habits. Now he does. Could it be because he’s worried about you or is he just insensitive?

Could it be because he wants you to lose a few pounds and he thinks making fun of you will help motivate you?

8) He follows a special diet with you

You know the whole, “let’s eat nothing but salad for dinner.”

Or what about the “I’m only eating raw foods this week.”

No, that’s not a coincidence. He’s not on a diet because of himself, he’s following special diets because he wants you to start eating healthier and lose weight.

9) He reminds you of how fit you were when you met

Have you noticed that he keeps bringing up how hot you were when you met?

Maybe he keeps showing you pictures from when you first started dating – when you were several pounds lighter.

Does he say things like, “You looked super sexy in that dress” – a dress you can’t fit into anymore?

The truth is that he’s trying to tell you that he prefers you without the extra weight. It’s up to you what you want to do about it.

But think about it. If it comes from a good and kind place, if he’s worried about your health and loves you no matter what, then you shouldn’t feel so bad.

Is it ok for my boyfriend to ask me to lose weight?

It really depends on why he’s asking you to lose weight.

If he’s genuinely worried about your health and his concern comes from a place of love – that’s one thing.

But, if you’ve just gained a little weight and are still healthy, just don’t fit into his idea of what attractive is, then that’s a completely different story.

If he’s asking you to lose weight because he wants to control the way you look, then that’s not ok.

What should I do?

Well, you’ve got two options:

If you’re happy with your weight

Don’t lose weight

If you’re healthy and happy with yourself and confident in your own body, why would you want to change for him? 

You’ll just end up resenting him for trying to control your body and relationship. Plus, you’ll miss out on eating a bunch of yummy stuff.

Tell him that you’re happy with your current weight.

If you’re happy with the way you look, then there’s no reason to lose any weight. You don’t need to make yourself smaller for him.

He may be upset at first, but he’ll get over it eventually if he really loves you. If not, then you have to ask yourself if he’s the guy you want to be with.

If you’re not happy with the way you look, or you think your weight may cause some health problems down the line, then you should work on losing the weight.

Just remember, you’re doing it for you, not for him.
